The Supreme Court has provided protection from arrest to Anupam Mittal, the founder of shaadi.com, and two others for two weeks in a case involving alleged fraud on the matrimonial platform. A bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and N V Anjaria overturned a Telangana High Court decision and sent the matter back to the high court for re-examination. The apex court also asked Mittal to seek interim bail from the high court. The case revolves around a Hyderabad woman's claim that she was cheated out of ₹11 lakh by a man who used a fake profile on shaadi.com and that the platform failed to verify user details adequately. The Supreme Court emphasized that it had not made any judgment on the merits of the case, stating that the matter should be considered by the high court. In the meantime, Mittal will not face coercive action for eight weeks, allowing him to seek interim relief from the high court. Senior advocate Atmaram Nadkarni, representing Mittal, argued that his client was merely facilitating matches and cooperating with the investigation. The top court had issued a notice to the Telangana government and stayed all proceedings on June 26. The Telangana High Court had refused to quash the FIR against Mittal and the other accused in the case last year.
