A top Swiggy executive has emphasized that delivery jobs in India should be viewed as flexible employment opportunities rather than gig work. Food Marketplace CEO Rohit Kapoor described the large pool of delivery partners as a 'third pillar' of the job market, alongside formal employment and entrepreneurship. At the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, Kapoor stated that the delivery workforce provides flexible employment options for millions of people. He pointed out that almost 2.5 million individuals worked on the Swiggy platform at some point last year, highlighting the sector's vast scale and potential for growth. Kapoor welcomed the government's social security code, which he believes is a step in the right direction. However, he urged stakeholders to recognize the unique characteristics of the delivery workforce and avoid applying the same parameters as formal employment. This, he warned, could stifle the growth of the sector. The Swiggy executive emphasized that the delivery workforce is diverse, comprising individuals who choose to work on their own terms, including students seeking extra income, those looking for a second income, and people who want to work long-term. Kapoor expressed his desire to educate the public about the benefits and characteristics of flexible employment, which he believes can create new livelihood opportunities.
