A shocking incident has unfolded in Telangana's Yacharam village near Hyderabad, where nearly 100 stray dogs were allegedly poisoned, prompting police to register a case against the local sarpanch and two other panchayat representatives. The mass killings of stray dogs in Telangana have been a growing concern, with over 500 reported deaths across multiple districts since January 6. An animal welfare activist linked to the Stray Animal Foundation of India lodged a complaint at the Yacharam police station, alleging that the dogs were injected with a poisonous substance on January 19. While the complainant claims that nearly 100 dogs were killed, preliminary verification suggests that about 50 animals may have died. The investigation is still in its early stages, and officials are working to confirm the exact number of deaths. Similar incidents have been reported from other parts of the state, including Hanamkonda and Kamareddy districts, where cases have been filed against several individuals, including village sarpanches, for allegedly killing stray dogs. Investigators suspect that some elected village representatives may have ordered or carried out the killings in an attempt to address complaints from residents about the stray dog problem. Police believe the actions may have been taken to honour promises made to villagers ahead of the gram panchayat elections held in December last year. Authorities assure that investigations are ongoing, and those found responsible will face strict action under the law.
