Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has sharply criticized Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado for presenting her Nobel Peace Prize medal to US President Donald Trump at the White House. According to Tharoor, Machado's decision was a 'gold-plated collision of Venezuelan desperation and American ego'. Machado had sought to present the medal to Trump in an attempt to influence Venezuela's future after the US ousted longtime leader Nicolas Maduro. However, Tharoor argues that this move was a desperate attempt to regain relevance in the eyes of the White House, which has increasingly backed Venezuela's new leader, Delcy Rodriguez. In an op-ed article, Tharoor described Machado's move as 'political theatre' aimed at buying her way back into the White House's good books. He also accused Trump of demonstrating 'amoral ruthlessness' by accepting the medal. The Nobel Committee has clarified that the Nobel Prize and its laureate are inseparable, and that Machado remains the rightful recipient of the award. However, Tharoor's scathing criticism of Machado's decision has sparked a heated debate about the implications of her actions and the motivations behind them.
