Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has directed the state home department to conduct a preliminary inquiry into allegations against senior IPS officer and Director General of Police (DGP) K Ramachandra Rao. The probe follows a video circulating on social media that appears to show Rao engaging in inappropriate behaviour with a woman while on duty at his office. Siddaramaiah stated that he was made aware of the video on Monday and emphasized that disciplinary action will be taken if misconduct is proven, regardless of the officer's seniority. State Minister for Women and Children's Development Laxmi Hebbalkar echoed this sentiment, affirming that action will be taken if the allegations are true. Opposition parties have demanded Rao's immediate suspension and a thorough investigation into the allegations, accusing the government of protecting influential officers. Senior BJP MLA S Suresh Kumar slammed the DGP's alleged actions, stating that they have brought shame to the entire police department. Rao has denied the allegations, claiming that the video was fabricated using artificial intelligence. However, the DGP's credibility has been called into question due to a previous incident involving high-profile gold smuggling, in which his step-daughter was convicted. Rao was sent on compulsory leave in March but later reinstated and appointed to his current position. The incident has sparked concerns about accountability within the police department and the government's ability to address such cases. Former Bengaluru city police commissioner Bhaskar Rao noted that incidents like this are embarrassing for the department and that lack of accountability is a major factor in their recurrence.
