A group of Democratic U.S. senators from Maryland and Virginia has expressed concerns over the Trump administration's decision to abruptly end a lease agreement with a nonprofit managing three public golf courses in Washington, D.C. The National Links Trust, which oversees Rock Creek Park Golf, East Potomac Golf Links, and Langston Golf Course, had five years remaining on its 50-year lease with the National Park Service. According to sources, the administration claimed that the trust defaulted on the lease due to slow progress on course improvements. However, the senators dispute this claim, arguing that the move is a clear example of executive overreach by the Trump administration. In a letter to Department of the Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and National Park Service acting director Jessica Brown, the senators questioned the administration's motives and criticized the decision to terminate the lease. The letter, signed by Senators Angela Alsobrooks, Tim Kaine, Chris Van Hollen, and Mark R. Warner, also highlighted concerns over the administration's handling of the East Potomac White Course, which was left with debris after the trust's ousting. The National Links Trust has denied any wrongdoing, stating that it had consistently complied with lease obligations and worked to improve the courses. The organization expressed devastation over the administration's decision to terminate the lease, which it believes was made without justification. President Donald Trump's ownership of numerous golf courses worldwide has raised eyebrows, particularly in the D.C. area, where his influence has been evident since his return to office last year. The renaming of the Kennedy Center and his suggestion to name the Washington Commanders' new stadium after himself have sparked controversy. The senators' concerns over the golf course takeover reflect broader concerns about the Trump administration's approach to governance and its willingness to exert executive power beyond its limits.
