West Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari directed officials to reduce the number of vehicles in his convoy to save fuel, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's example.
Adhikari stated that he has instructed the Directorate of Security to limit the number of vehicles used for his movements to the minimum requirement.
The Prime Minister had urged citizens to adopt austerity measures, including car pooling and using public transport, to help India tackle economic uncertainties due to a global hike in crude oil prices.
State government officials said that all BJP MLAs and ministers would use fewer vehicles from now on.
Adhikari's convoy, which usually has eight to ten cars, had five vehicles when he arrived at the assembly.
A large number of BJP MLAs arrived from the MLA Hostel on Kolkata's Kyd Street in buses used by the assembly.
