Chelsea's League Cup campaign got a boost as they edged past third-tier Cardiff City 3-1 at the Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday. Despite being the underdogs, Cardiff held their own against the Premier League side, who were forced to rely on substitutes Alejandro Garnacho and Pedro Neto to secure the win. The hosts, led by a sold-out crowd, dominated possession in the first half and came close to scoring through a deflected cross from Isaak Davies. However, Chelsea struggled to break through the disciplined Cardiff defense, which earned every challenge and clearance. Manager Enzo Maresca made a bold move by starting an entirely new lineup, and his decision paid off when Garnacho opened the scoring in the 57th minute. The substitute's goal was a result of a poor pass from the Cardiff defense, which Facundo Buonanotte capitalized on with a clever pass to Garnacho. Cardiff fought back, with David Turnbull netting an equalizer with 15 minutes left. However, Chelsea regained the lead with eight minutes remaining when Pedro Neto's shot deflected past the Cardiff keeper. Garnacho sealed the win with his second goal in added time. The win sets up a semi-final clash for Chelsea, while Manchester City and Newcastle United will be in action against Brentford and Fulham, respectively, on Wednesday. Arsenal and Crystal Palace will contest the final quarter-final match next Tuesday.
