Christian Eriksen, a Danish midfielder, suffered a cardiac arrest during a friendly match between Denmark and Ukraine in 2021. He was stabilized after receiving emergency treatment, including CPR and an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

The incident renewed interest in Eriksen's medical history and the heart condition that nearly claimed his life. Doctors determined that he required an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), a device that monitors heart rhythms and can deliver an electrical shock if it detects a potentially life-threatening abnormal heartbeat.

The ICD was implanted under Eriksen's skin, near his collarbone, with wires connected to his heart. The device has allowed him to return to football, but Italian sporting regulations initially forced him to terminate his contract with Inter Milan due to the presence of the ICD.

Eriksen returned to football with Premier League side Brentford in January 2022, after months of rehabilitation and medical evaluation.
