The Detroit Lions have made a significant change in their backfield, trading running back David Montgomery to the Houston Texans.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Texans sent a fourth-round draft pick, a seventh-round draft pick, and offensive lineman Juice Scruggs to Detroit in exchange for Montgomery.

The main reason for the trade is to give Jahmyr Gibbs a bigger role, as Montgomery is now 28 years old and running backs can decline quickly at that stage of their careers.

Even with fewer opportunities in 2025, Montgomery still ran for eight touchdowns and averaged 4.5 yards per carry, showing he can still be an effective player when given the chance.

Montgomery was not happy with his smaller role last season, having the lowest numbers of his career in rushing yards, rushing attempts, and total touches.
