In a significant trade, the New York Mets have parted ways with second baseman Jeff McNeil, sending him to the Oakland Athletics in exchange for minor league right-hander Yordan Rodriguez. The deal, announced on Monday, also includes a cash component to offset the remaining $17.75 million of McNeil's $50 million contract. This marks the latest in a series of departures for the underperforming Mets, who finished the season without a playoff spot despite having the second-highest payroll in the league. McNeil, a 33-year-old veteran with a .326 batting average in 2022, has been one of the key players to leave the Mets this season. He hit .243 with 12 home runs and 54 RBIs in 122 games this year, after recovering from a strained right oblique. McNeil is set to earn $15.75 million next season as part of his contract, which includes a $15.75 million team option for 2027. The Mets are rebuilding, bolstering their roster with recent additions such as closer Devin Williams, infielder Jorge Polanco, and Gold Glove second baseman Marcus Semien. They also have a pending deal with free agent reliever Luke Weaver. Meanwhile, the A's designated left-hander Ken Waldichuk for assignment following the trade.
