Mexico is looking to break a World Cup curse when it hosts South Africa in the opening match of the 48-team tournament. The team has a record of five losses and two draws in its seven previous opening-day games.
Coach Javier Aguirre is aware of the trend and plans to use it as motivation for his team. 'We must break that trend,' he said. 'It's a good reason to tell them we need to go out there and win the match.'
The game is a rematch of the 2010 World Cup opener, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Mexico is riding a seven-game unbeaten streak and has the team playing its best football in years.
Aguirre hopes that the team can get off to a good start and make history. 'It could be a great day for us; come what may, it will be a celebration that endures for decades,' he said.
South Africa coach Hugo Broos is aware of the challenge ahead but is confident in his team's preparation. 'We have to focus on the game and if we can do that and not be bothered by the noise of the Mexicans, we can have a good game tomorrow.'
