University of Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore has been abruptly fired, effective immediately, following an internal investigation into allegations of an 'inappropriate relationship with a staff member'. The university's athletic director, Warde Manuel, made the announcement, stating that the behavior constitutes a clear violation of university policy and that the school maintains a zero-tolerance policy for such conduct. Moore's five-year contract, worth $5.5 million annually, will not require a buyout as the university has deemed the firing to be 'for cause'. This decision comes after the school and its head coach faced penalties for sign-stealing. The Michigan Wolverines, the college football's winningest program, are now searching for their third head coach in four years. Moore's tenure as head coach was marked by controversy, including a sign-stealing scandal that led to a two-game suspension in 2025. He was also at the center of a scandal involving deleted text messages with a former staffer, Connor Stalions, who was at the center of an illicit scouting scheme. The deleted messages were ultimately recovered and provided to the NCAA. With Moore out, Michigan has appointed Biff Poggi as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Poggi previously stepped in during Moore's suspension and will now lead the team as they prepare to face No. 14 Texas in the Citrus Bowl on December 31.
