In a thrilling finale, Orlando Pirates emerged victorious in the South African League Cup final, thanks to Relebohile Mofokeng's first goal of the season. The 21-year-old winger scored in extra time, netting the decisive goal in the 105th minute. Mofokeng's side-footed finish past 40-year-old goalkeeper Washington Arubi sealed a 1-0 win for the favourites, who had squandered numerous chances in regular time. The sell-out crowd of 44,000 in Polokwane witnessed a closely contested match, with Marumo Gallants defending stoutly but lacking the attacking power to equalise. The final ended 0-0 after 90 minutes, but Pirates' superior off-the-ball running and spatial awareness ultimately paid off. Pirates' coach Abdeslam Ouaddou praised his team's performance, saying they found space between the lines and executed their off-the-ball running effectively. Ouaddou also revealed that he had decided to substitute Mofokeng immediately after the goal, opting to close the game and maintain his team's advantage. Marumo Gallants' coach Alexandre Lafitte, just 28 years old, expressed his disappointment but pride in his team's efforts. Lafitte had predicted that one goal would settle the match, and unfortunately for his side, it was Pirates who scored the decisive goal. The victory takes Orlando Pirates halfway to a sweep of the four domestic trophies, including the league title. They are currently two points ahead of defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns and have played one match less, halfway through the season. The win also marks the last match for Pirates' captain Mbekezile Mbokazi, who will join Major League Soccer club Chicago Fire after the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Chicago reportedly paid 51 million rand for the South African international.
