Penn State's coaching change is almost complete, with Matt Campbell's hiring expected to be finalized soon. The new coach takes over after James Franklin's departure, which came mid-season following a disappointing 0-3 start in the Big Ten. Campbell's first task will be to revitalize the team, which had a promising start but faltered under interim coach Terry Smith. As the transfer portal opens on January 2, Campbell is likely to target players who can help turn the team's fortunes around. One key position is quarterback, where Rocco Becht stands out. The Iowa State quarterback has been a starter for three seasons, boasting impressive stats: 9,190 passing yards, 64 touchdowns, and 26 interceptions. Running backs Carson Hansen and Abu Sama are another duo Campbell may eye. Hansen has been a workhorse this season, rushing for 950 yards and six touchdowns, while Sama has nearly matched those numbers. A third target is wide receiver Chase Sowell, who transferred from East Carolina and has shown his ability to stretch the field with 32 receptions for 500 yards and two touchdowns. Campbell's departure from Iowa State leaves behind a legacy of success. During his decade-long tenure, the Cyclones achieved eight winning seasons, three bowl wins, and a historic 11-win season in 2024. Before Campbell's arrival, Iowa State had only three bowl victories in 133 years. His overall coaching record stands at 107-70, with a five-year stretch at Toledo preceding his time in Ames. The Cyclones committed to him long-term in August, extending his contract through 2032 at $5 million annually, with a $2 million buyout.
