The Pittsburgh Pirates are one step closer to becoming a contender in 2026 with the signing of All-Star first baseman/outfielder Ryan O'Hearn to a $29 million, two-year contract. The deal includes $500,000 in annual performance bonuses and aims to revitalize the team's struggling offense, which ranked among the worst in the majors last season. O'Hearn, a left-handed hitter, had his best season in 2025, hitting .281 with 17 home runs and 63 RBIs while making his first All-Star appearance with Kansas City and San Diego. This is the Pirates' first multi-year free agent deal since 2016, and it follows their acquisition of two-time All-Star second baseman Brandon Lowe last week. The addition of O'Hearn gives the Pirates valuable versatility, as he can play both first base and corner outfield positions. With left-hitting Spencer Horwitz already on the team, O'Hearn is likely to see time at first base and in the outfield alongside Oneil Cruz and Bryan Reynolds. O'Hearn's career batting average is .252, but his numbers have improved significantly over the last three seasons, with a .277 average, 46 home runs, and 182 RBIs since 2023. He will now play in PNC Park, where the Clemente Wall is just 320 feet from home plate, making him a formidable opponent in the heart of the Pirates' lineup.
