The United States has strengthened its World Baseball Classic pitching staff with the addition of 2022 AL Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal and reigning NL Cy Young winner Paul Skenes. Skubal, a key member of the Detroit Tigers, joins a team that also includes reigning NL Cy Young winner Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The US team will also be bolstered by the inclusion of All-Star relievers Mason Miller of the San Diego Padres and David Bednar of the New York Yankees. Rounding out the pitching staff are Clay Holmes and Nolan McLean of the New York Mets, and Joe Ryan of the Minnesota Twins. Skubal's addition brings a boost to the US team's pitching depth, which is crucial given the tournament's restrictions. In the 2023 World Baseball Classic, pitchers were limited to 65 pitches in the first round, 80 in the quarterfinals, and 95 in the championship round. Additionally, players were required to have four rest days after throwing 50 pitches and one day after 30 pitches. The US team's roster also features an impressive lineup of position players, including catchers Cal Raleigh and Will Smith, infielders Gunnar Henderson, Brice Turang, and Bobby Witt Jr., outfielders Corbin Carroll, Pete Crow-Armstrong, and Aaron Judge, and designated hitter Kyle Schwarber. The US team is set to compete in the World Baseball Classic from March 5-17. With Skubal and Skenes on board, fans can expect a thrilling tournament with some of the best players in the game.
