A devastating fire swept through downtown Arcata on Friday, engulfing multiple structures and prompting a massive emergency response. The inferno reportedly started at Hensel's Hardware near Tenth Street and H/I streets, with thick smoke and flames visible from blocks away. Local witnesses shared shocking videos on social media, capturing the intensity of the blaze.
As the fire raged on, authorities quickly shut down traffic in all directions around 9th and I streets, allowing firefighters to focus on containing the spread. According to reports, four two-story buildings were involved in the blaze.
Humboldt Bay Fire confirmed the incident, urging residents to avoid the area. Nearby apartment residents were ordered to evacuate, and the Red Cross was activated to support those displaced. Additional crews from Rio Dell and other departments were called in to provide support while local firefighters focused on extinguishing the flames.
Witnesses, including Laura Keenados and Josh Buck, documented the dramatic early moments of the fire. 'There is a huge fire, complete with explosions, in the center of Arcata,' one local posted on X. Another social media user shared a personal connection to the fire, saying 'It's all gone' after their friend's art studio in the building was destroyed.
As the situation unfolded, PG&E reported a potential outage near C Street. Mandatory evacuations were issued in the area. The owner of Dandar's Boardgames and Books confirmed that their business was a 'total loss' after the fire.
Arcata is a small city in Humboldt County, Northern California, situated on the Pacific coast along Humboldt Bay, approximately 280 miles north of San Francisco. The city's downtown area was severely impacted by the blaze, with multiple buildings destroyed or severely damaged.
