In a tense incident over the Baltic Sea, Poland's military scrambled fighter jets to intercept a Russian reconnaissance aircraft on Thursday. The Polish army confirmed that the Russian plane was visually identified and escorted out of the area. This is the latest in a series of airspace breaches by Russia and its ally Belarus in the region. Poland's National Security Bureau reported that dozens of objects entered Polish airspace from Belarus overnight, with four identified as suspected smuggling balloons. The Polish military temporarily closed part of the airspace over northeast Poland's Podlaskie region to ensure security. The region borders Belarus, where smuggler balloons have repeatedly disrupted air traffic in neighboring Lithuania. Poland's security officials suspect that the recent airspace breaches may be a provocation disguised as a smuggling operation. The incidents have raised concerns among NATO member states on the eastern flank, who have been on high alert since September when Russian jets violated Estonia's airspace. The Belarusian and Russian embassies in Warsaw have not responded to requests for comment on the latest incident. The Polish military's swift response and temporary airspace closure highlight the country's commitment to protecting its sovereignty and securing its borders.
