Filmmaker Shakun Batra reminisces about the making of Kapoor & Sons as the film completes a decade. The movie, starring Rishi Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Fawad Khan, and others, was a game-changer in its portrayal of homosexuality.
Batra recalls the two-year gap between writing and production, with many actors initially turning down the project due to discomfort with playing homosexuals.
Fawad Khan's interest in the script was sparked by a single question: 'Is homosexuality a whisper or a shout?' Batra's response – that it would be presented subtly – convinced Khan to join the project.
The film's subtle hints at Fawad's character's identity, such as tangerine shoes and self-conscious moments, aimed to make families connect with the story and see the character as part of their own family.
Batra praises Rishi Kapoor's performance, saying their on-set arguments were replaced by love and appreciation after the film's release.
He also credits Alia Bhatt for her generosity and energy on set, despite having a small role.
