The Kerala government has announced plans to appeal against the acquittal of Malayalam actor Dileep in the 2017 assault case of a South Indian actress. The verdict, delivered by the Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court on Monday, acquitted Dileep and three others while finding six others, including prime accused Sunil NS, guilty of the crime. State Law Minister P Rajeev expressed support for the survivor, stating that the verdict did not provide complete justice. The government has directed the prosecution to initiate further proceedings, and the Chief Minister has been informed of the decision to appeal. The film industry is divided over the verdict, with some, including film director B Unnikrishnan and producer Suresh Kumar, welcoming Dileep's acquittal. However, many actors, including Parvathy Thiruvothu and Rima Kallingal, have expressed solidarity with the survivor and pledged their continued support. The assault on the actress, which took place in 2017, was a highly publicized case that shook the conscience of Kerala society. The trial, which concluded on November 25, involved ten accused, including Dileep, who was arrested in July 2017 after evidence linked him to the crime. The Kerala government's decision to appeal against the verdict is a significant development in the case, which has sparked widespread debate and discussion in the state.
