The Multiplex Association of India (MAI) has expressed concerns over Netflix's proposed acquisition of Warner Bros Discovery, citing a potential threat to India's theatrical film industry. The deal, worth $72 billion, would see Netflix acquire Warner Bros' studio and streaming business, including its television and motion picture divisions. According to MAI President Kamal Gianchandani, the acquisition poses a significant risk to the Indian film industry, particularly in terms of reduced high-quality content for cinemas and potentially shortened or non-existent theatrical windows. Warner Bros has historically been a key partner to Indian cinemas, contributing to the release calendar with successful global and local titles. Gianchandani emphasized that cinemas in India are not just entertainment venues, but cultural hubs and significant economic contributors, supporting millions of livelihoods across production, distribution, exhibition, and ancillary services. MAI will continue to highlight these concerns to regulatory authorities both in India and internationally. The acquisition would inevitably impact revenues, limit consumer choice, and weaken the broader ecosystem of film production, distribution, and exhibition in India. MAI will work closely with regulatory bodies and industry partners to address these concerns and ensure the long-term sustainability of the Indian film industry.
