Renowned theatre director Randhir Ranjan Roy, who recently brought his musical love story Kaneez to the stage, has revived plans to recreate Amitabh Bachchan's 1984 blockbuster Sharaabi as a musical production. Roy, a long-time fan of Bappi Lahiri's iconic music in the film, had initially shelved the project following the composer's passing in 2022. However, sources close to the director suggest that he is now seeking to acquire the music rights for the musical adaptation. Sharaabi, directed by Prakash Mehra and starring Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Prada, Pran, and Om Prakash, tells the story of a spoilt son's descent into alcoholism and depression. The film's timeless songs, including De De Pyaar De, Inteha Ho Gayi, and Manzilen Apni Jagah Hai, remain a staple of the retro music scene. With his experience in reviving classic films through musical adaptations, as seen in his recent collaboration with singer Lucky Ali, Roy is poised to bring Sharaabi to life on stage. If successful, this project could become a landmark production in Indian theatre, offering audiences a unique and captivating experience.
