Actor and comedian Vir Das has expressed his thoughts on whether prominent award shows in India can feature roast-style hosting like the Oscars. In a recent post on his X account, Vir explained that the concept of having comedians host and roast the Oscars or film awards works because it humanises the celebrated individuals for a night. However, he believes that star egos in India won't take a joke from anyone not at their level, making it difficult for a huge star hosting to be funny for the people watching.
Vir Das, who has hosted a few award shows in India, thinks that the power imbalance between the host and the guests is a major issue. He pointed out that a huge star hosting works for the people in the room but not always for the people watching. This is because the power imbalance is off, making it challenging for the host to make jokes that are funny for everyone.
Vir Das's comments come after Conan O'Brien returned to host the Oscars for the second year in a row. During the show, Conan addressed several issues and even took a shot at Timothee Chalamet for his comments on opera and ballet. The actor took the joke with a laugh, showing that he was able to handle the roast-style hosting.
