Andy Burnham has emerged as the frontrunner to succeed Keir Starmer as UK Prime Minister after Starmer announced his resignation. Burnham, the current mayor of Greater Manchester, has pledged to focus on economic growth, the cost of living, and public services.

In a post on X, Burnham thanked Starmer for his leadership and dedication during a challenging period and confirmed that he would put himself forward in the leadership contest.

Burnham stressed the need for an orderly and responsible transition, saying that the country expects stability, seriousness, and a continued focus on the issues that matter most.

He added that Labour's priority should be to restore public confidence and deliver progress on economic growth, housing, public services, and opportunities for the next generation.

Burnham has been seen as Keir Starmer's biggest rival in the Labour Party, partly due to his perceived left-leaning politics, which has been a traditional Labour stance.

He has earned the moniker 'King of the North' for his fierce backing of northern England and has marked big wins in three mayoral polls since 2017.
