The California Governor election is underway, with voters seeking Gavin Newsom's successor. Democrat Eric Swalwell initially emerged as a strong candidate but dropped out due to allegations of sexual harassment.

Notably, California has adopted 'jungle primaries', where all voters receive the full list of candidates, and the top two finishers move to the general election, regardless of party.

The polls close at 8pm PT or 11pm ET on Election Day. Ballots must be cast in person or returned by this time. If anyone is in line before 8pm, they'll still be allowed to vote.

Key candidates to watch include Democrat Xavier Becerra, a 35-year veteran of California and national politics, and Republican Steve Hilton, a conservative commentator and former Fox News host.

Democrat Tom Steyer, the founder of a San Francisco-based hedge fund, has also emerged as a contender, running as a progressive populist and backed by a Bernie Sanders-aligned group.
