The entire island nation of Cuba was left without power on Monday, affecting 11 million people, as a result of a boiler issue at the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant.

The crisis was caused by a fuel shortage, which was exacerbated by the US energy embargo imposed by President Donald Trump.

Cuba relies heavily on fuel imports, primarily from Venezuela, but has not received critical oil shipments for the last three months following the US capture of Nicolas Maduro in January.

The country's medical system has been severely impacted, with tens of thousands of surgeries postponed due to the power outage.

The Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant was forced to operate at a significantly low wattage level, leading to a cascading grid failure, and the country is currently operating on natural gas and solar energy.
