Jurors in the Karmelo Anthony murder trial have reached a verdict, but attention is also turning to Anthony's defense team, led by Dallas attorney Mike Howard.

Howard, a Dallas-Fort Worth-based criminal defense attorney, has spent his career representing people charged with offenses in state and federal court.

He graduated from SMU Dedman School of Law in 2001 and holds a bachelor's degree from Texas Tech University, according to his SMU faculty profile.

Howard's strategy in the Anthony trial has focused on poking holes in the prosecution's case, highlighting inconsistencies in witness testimony and questioning the accounts of the altercation.

The case involves Karmelo Anthony, 19, who is charged with murder in the April 2025 stabbing death of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet at Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco, Texas.

Prosecutors say the stabbing was unjustified, while Anthony has claimed self-defense throughout the trial.
