The Federal Election Commission (FEC) has launched an investigation into a covert Republican effort to influence Democratic primaries in key House races.
Two pop-up super PACs, Real Change PAC and Lead Left, spent over $4.3 million in Democratic congressional primaries in Texas, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Nebraska, and Maine.
The FEC filings reveal that the two groups were exclusively funded by Conservative Americans PAC, which has ties to Senate Republicans and other GOP-aligned entities.
The Republican-backed strategy produced uneven results, with some Democratic candidates emerging victorious, while others faltered.
In Maine's 2nd District, Real Change PAC spent $500,000 to promote state auditor Matt Dunlap, who secured the Democratic nomination.
However, in Nebraska's 2nd District, Lead Left's efforts to defeat state Sen. John Cavanaugh were successful, as he lost to political activist Denise Powell.
The Republican-backed strategy faltered in other races, including New Jersey's 7th District, where Real Change PAC's efforts to defeat Navy veteran Rebecca Bennett were unsuccessful.
