Mohsen Rezaei, a 71-year-old former chief of the elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), has been appointed as the senior military adviser to Iran's new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei.
Rezaei, known for his hardline stance against Western influence in the region, has a long history of serving in senior positions within the Iranian system, including as the Commander-in-Chief of the IRGC for 16 years.
His appointment comes as Iran continues to retaliate against US and Israeli targets in the region, following the killing of the previous Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in a US-Israeli strike on February 28.
Rezaei has made several controversial statements in the past, including a claim that Pakistan would attack Israel with a nuclear bomb if it used one on Iran, a statement that was rejected by the Pakistani government.
He has also been the subject of an Interpol Red Notice issued by Argentina, where he is named as a suspect in the 1994 bombing of a Jewish community center that killed 85 people.
