Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has announced the suspension of Italy's defence agreement with Israel, citing the 'current situation'. The agreement, approved in 2006, involves the exchange of military equipment and technology research.

The decision comes after tensions rose between the two countries over the past week, following Italy's accusation of Israeli forces firing warning shots at a convoy of Italian UN peacekeepers in Lebanon.

Italy has condemned Israel's attacks on Lebanon, with Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani calling them 'unacceptable attacks' on Lebanese civilians.

Meloni has pressed for peace negotiations to end the war between Israel, the US, and Iran, and urged stabilising the situation in the Strait of Hormuz and reopening it.
