Pro-Khalistan elements in Canada have sparked concern with recent events featuring violent imagery, including the assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The events were held in the Greater Toronto Area and Vancouver, despite Prime Minister Mark Carney's warning against bringing foreign hatreds to Canada.
The secessionist group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) boasted about an activist reenacting the assassination of Indira Gandhi in front of the Indian Consulate in Vancouver, demonstrating the manner in which Gandhi was assassinated on October 31, 1984.
The events also featured a float at an event in GTA showing the killing, as well as images of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and Talwinder Singh Parmar, who were linked to violent Khalistan-linked terrorism and the bombing of Air India flight 182.
The National Alliance of Indo-Canadians expressed concern over the "toxic glorification of violence" by Canada-based Khalistan Extremists, while the Hindu Canadian Foundation called for decisive action to make streets safer from hate.
Prime Minister Mark Carney has welcomed the proposed bill C-9, which strengthens the Criminal Code and creates new offences for intimidation and obstruction at places of worship and other institutions.
