Nithya Raman, the Los Angeles City Council member, has emerged as a top contender in California's primary elections, advancing to a November runoff against incumbent Mayor Karen Bass.
Raman is married to Vali Chandrasekaran, a television screenwriter and producer known for his work in Hollywood comedy.
Chandrasekaran has written and produced episodes for popular television series, including 30 Rock and Modern Family, and has been nominated for several Emmys and other awards.
The couple, both Harvard graduates, lives in Los Angeles' Silver Lake neighborhood with their twin elementary-schoolers, Karna and Kaveri.
