US President Donald Trump has signed two executive orders to accelerate the development of quantum computing, a technology that could outpace today's supercomputers.

The orders direct US government agencies to work with the private sector to develop a quantum computer for scientific research by 2028, with the aim of delivering a large-scale commercial device by 2029.

Unlike regular computers, quantum computers use 'qubits' that can process enormous numbers of possibilities simultaneously, making them potentially far faster and more powerful.

However, quantum computers currently make too many errors to be used reliably outside of research settings.

The second order involves cybersecurity and post-quantum cryptography, with the aim of accelerating the migration to quantum-proof encryption by 2031.
