Claude Guillemot, co-founder of Ubisoft and chairman of Guillemot Corp, has died in a plane crash in western France, authorities confirmed.

Guillemot, 69, and a flight instructor were flying a twin-motor Cessna 421 when it crashed near La Baule airport on the Atlantic coast.

Both pilots were licensed and experienced, according to reports.

An investigation is underway into the incident.

Ubisoft expressed its condolences to Guillemot's family and loved ones, saying it was 'deeply saddened' by the news.

Guillemot, born on October 30, 1956, was one of five brothers who founded Ubisoft in 1986.

He played a key role in taking the company from a mail-order software business to a global gaming giant, behind iconic titles like Assassin's Creed.

Guillemot also served as chairman of Guillemot Corporation, which makes entertainment hardware and accessories.
