Earthquakes hit Japan and Venezuela on Wednesday afternoon, prompting a tsunami warning in the Caribbean but no threat to the US coast.

The USGS reported a 7.1 magnitude earthquake in Venezuela, followed by a 7.5 magnitude quake, prompting a tsunami warning for Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

No tsunami threat has been announced for the US coast, but the NWS's Tsunami Warning Center said there is a threat to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands of sea level fluctuations and strong ocean currents.

A 6.9 magnitude earthquake was also reported in Japan, with a tsunami alert issued for the area.

Initial reports from Venezuela suggest significant damage, including structural collapse in Caracas, with a massive emergency response underway.
