The United States has signaled that Iranian players will be allowed to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but individuals linked to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) will not be permitted entry.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that there is no objection to the team's presence, but concern lies with non-playing members traveling with the team.

Rubio emphasized that the problem is not with the athletes themselves but with individuals who have ties to the IRGC and may be trying to enter the country under false pretenses.

The US has designated the IRGC as a 'foreign terrorist organization,' and the restriction flows from that classification.

US President Donald Trump indicated that his administration does not intend to penalize sportspersons amid geopolitical tensions.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to kick off on June 11 and will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
