The death toll in Venezuela's devastating earthquakes is expected to rise, with thousands still missing after the 7.2- and 7.5-magnitude quakes struck on Wednesday evening.

Rescuers have been digging through collapsed buildings since Thursday, with teams rushing to northern regions devastated by the two powerful earthquakes that have so far left around 589 people dead and at least 4,300 injured.

The first earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.2, hit west of Moron on the Caribbean coast, about 170 kilometers west of Caracas at 03:34:33, with a depth of 22 kilometers.

Just a minute later, a second 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit, with a depth of 10 kilometers and an epicenter 16 kilometers southwest of Moron.

Interim president Delcy Rodriguez has declared worst-hit La Guaira a disaster zone, where more than 250 buildings were damaged.
