A powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck Venezuela on Wednesday, just hours after a 7.1-magnitude quake had already shaken the country.

The second quake had a depth of 10 kilometers and its epicenter was 16 kilometers southwest of the city of Moron, Venezuela.

Earlier, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake collapsed buildings in the capital, Caracas, with people evacuated from swaying buildings and staying outside as aftershocks could further damage some structures.

Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello said the quake could be felt in several states, with alarming situations in the Altamira neighborhood of Caracas.

According to the USGS, the earthquake in Venezuela was a 'double event,' with the 7.1 quake being a pre-shock followed by the larger 7.5 quake.

A tsunami threat has been issued for Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, but not for the US coast.
