The Manipur government has made a significant breakthrough in its efforts to resettle internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the Bishnupur district. On Thursday, 257 IDPs from 64 households were relocated from the Leimaram high school relief camp to their homes in Waroiching village, marking a crucial step towards rebuilding a peaceful society. The resettlement was flagged off by Bishnupur deputy commissioner Pooja Elangbam, who expressed hope that this development would pave the way for a better future for the affected communities. To facilitate their return, the government has provided funds to the families to support the redevelopment of their abandoned houses. The resettlement initiative is part of a larger rehabilitation plan announced earlier this month, which involves state and district-level committees tasked with monitoring and coordinating the efforts to resettle the IDPs. The committees, chaired by the chief secretary and deputy commissioners, aim to address bottlenecks and ensure timely delivery of support to the affected families. Manipur has been grappling with the aftermath of ethnic violence that erupted in May 2023, resulting in the loss of over 260 lives and displacing approximately 50,000 people. The conflict, which initially involved the Meitei and Kuki communities, has since spread to almost every community in the state, leading to the dismissal of the state government in February this year.
