The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has sharpened its attack on the Congress, the largest Opposition party leading the INDIA bloc, ahead of a crucial meeting in Delhi. AAP leader Somnath Bharti declared that the alliance had 'no future' as long as the Congress led it, citing grievances in Punjab and Delhi. The fight between the two parties lies further north in the immediate, in Punjab, where they remain locked in a live contest. The AAP captured Punjab in 2022, winning 92 assembly seats and displacing the Congress, which is now the main opposition. In the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the Congress won seven of 13 seats in Punjab, while the AAP won three. The contest sharpened in assembly bypolls and the recent municipal polls, where the AAP won nearly half of the wards. Both parties are now preparing for the 2027 assembly elections, with the AAP looking to maintain its last major bastion in Punjab.
