Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday reiterated his long-standing demand for an Ahir Regiment in the Indian Army, hailing it as a fitting tribute to soldiers from the community who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The Indian Army veteran turned politician made the demand while honoring ex-servicemen, particularly those who fought in the 1962 India-China war. The Ahir Regiment demand, which has been part of the Samajwadi Party's manifesto, aims to acknowledge the bravery and contributions of soldiers from the Ahir community. While addressing a press conference, Yadav also called for the establishment of more military schools in the country, particularly in Uttar Pradesh. Yadav emphasized that India's military history, including the Rezang La conflict, is a testament to the bravery and sacrifice of its soldiers. He praised the courage displayed by Indian troops in historic battles, which continues to inspire generations. In a swipe at the government's Agnipath scheme, Yadav suggested that temporary recruitment of soldiers may hinder occasions to honor veterans. He encouraged other communities to raise demands for their own regiments and called for the voices of all to be heard. Yadav also urged the Centre to set up more military schools in the country, particularly in Uttar Pradesh, citing the need for greater representation of the state in the country's defense institutions. Currently, there are only five military schools in the country, with two each in Rajasthan and Karnataka, and one in Himachal Pradesh. The demand for an Ahir Regiment and the establishment of military schools in Uttar Pradesh is part of Yadav's efforts to acknowledge the contributions of soldiers from the state and to promote greater representation of Uttar Pradesh in the country's defense institutions.
