Two women died and at least 64 others were hospitalized in a suspected ammonia gas leak at a private shrimp processing factory in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvallur district.

The incident occurred at a facility in Kannigaipair village near Periyapalayam after a coolant used to store shrimp leaked, killing two people.

Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay directed officials to provide the best possible care to those affected, and an investigation is underway to identify the cause.

A three-member committee has been set up to probe the incident, and the government has secured two persons who own the unit.

The Tamil Nadu governor condoled the deaths and wished a speedy recovery to those hospitalized.
