Aravalli Hills in Jeopardy: Environmentalists Decry New Definition, Demand Protection

A wave of protests swept through Haryana's Gurugram and Rajasthan's Udaipur on Saturday, as environmental activists rallied against the Supreme Court's recent ruling on the definition of the Aravalli hills. The new elevation-based standard, which redefines the Aravalli hills as any landform with an elevation of 100 meters or more, has sparked fears of ecological destruction and increased risk of mining, construction, and commercial activities. According to the activists, the Aravalli mountain range serves as a natural protective shield for the Delhi-NCR region, preventing pollution, desertification, and water crises. They demanded that the government declare the Aravalli a completely protected area and establish a strict conservation policy. Protesters in Gurugram gathered outside the residence of Cabinet Minister Rao Narbir Singh, while lawyers in Udaipur marched through the city, submitting a memorandum to the President and district authorities. The protesters expressed concern that the new definition could compromise the ecological balance of the region, putting the future of coming generations at risk. "The government should take immediate action to conserve the Aravalli range," said Sanjiti, a protester. "Nature cannot be sacrificed for development.
