The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has accused the Election Commission (EC) of unfairly removing the names of 58 lakh legitimate voters from Bengal's electoral rolls as part of a larger effort to aid the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the 2026 state assembly polls. A TMC delegation met with Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Agarwal to express their concerns, citing the EC's 'SIR exercise' to identify 'absent, shifted, and duplicate' voters. However, the TMC claims this has resulted in genuine voters being unfairly labeled as 'unmapped' and subsequently stripped of their voting rights. The party alleges that the EC's mobile application does not allow 'unmapped' voters to provide required information, effectively disenfranchising them. TMC representatives also questioned the sudden change in the hearing date and the lack of transparency in the process. "We are witnessing a double standard in the way rules are being applied in Bengal," said Chandrima Bhattacharya, a TMC minister. "This is a clear attempt to punish the people of Bengal for repeatedly rejecting the BJP.
