In a significant blow to Maoist operations in Bastar, a top rebel leader was killed in a gunfight with security forces in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district on Friday. Fagnu Madvi, a 35-year-old active member of the Bhairamgarh area committee, was found dead in the Aadwada–Kotmeta forest area after a prolonged encounter with a team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG). Police seized a .303 rifle, a 9 mm pistol, scanner sets, a radio, and a medical kit from the spot. The incident marks a major success for security forces, who have been engaged in sustained and coordinated operations against Maoists in the region. According to Inspector General of Police, Bastar Range, Sundarraj Pattilingam, these efforts have significantly weakened the Maoist network in Bastar. He appealed to the remaining Maoist cadres to abandon violence and surrender under the government's rehabilitation policy. This year, 285 Maoists have been killed in gunfights with security forces in Chhattisgarh, with 256 eliminated in the Bastar division alone. The Bastar division comprises seven districts, including Bijapur, while 27 Maoists were killed in the Raipur division's Gariaband district and two in the Durg division's Mohla–Manpur–Ambagarh Chowki district.
