India is set to strengthen its AI regulations next year, with a bill aimed at safeguarding vulnerable sections of society, including children, women, and the poor, from life-threatening risks posed by AI-generated content. According to Nishikant Dubey, a BJP MP and head of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology, the proposed bill will extend the oversight of the Press Council of India (PCI) to digital news, which currently only regulates the print media. The bill also seeks to create new regulatory bodies to prevent the dissemination of false information, especially involving the abuse of AI tools. Dubey emphasized that the bill will address concerns raised by the Supreme Court, including the exploitation of freedom of expression, and prevent criminals from hiding behind freedom of speech. He also acknowledged the risks posed by AI-enabled attacks, but expressed confidence that Indian values and ideals will prevail. While the bill aims to strengthen AI regulations, Dubey also stressed the importance of awareness and education in safeguarding against the misuse of AI. Intelligence agencies, he said, will play a crucial role in protecting citizens from threats, both domestically and internationally. The proposed bill is expected to tackle issues such as the proliferation of lewd content on social media, the impact of Over-the-Top streaming, and the risks associated with Chinese AI tools like DeepSeek. With the bill set to be introduced in Parliament next year, authorities are working to find effective solutions to these pressing concerns.
