The Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Congress have raised allegations of 'double voting' against Suresh Gopi, a BJP MP and Union Minister of State. The controversy surrounds Gopi's voting in the recent local body elections in Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation, despite claiming to be a permanent resident in Thrissur. According to reports, Gopi and his family members voted in Sasthamangalam ward in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday. However, the BJP leader had previously added his name to the voter list in Thrissur last year, claiming he was a permanent resident there. The CPI and Congress have accused Gopi of violating Election Commission rules and have called for an explanation. CPI leader VS Sunil Kumar alleged that hundreds of people, including Gopi, had fraudulently added their names to the voter list in Thrissur, and that Gopi's actions were a clear breach of the rules. Kumar had previously filed a complaint with the Election Commission, but no action was taken. The Congress has also joined the fray, with Joseph Tajat, the district president of the Congress in Thrissur, demanding that Gopi apologize to the public and resign as MP. The BJP, however, has rejected the allegations, stating that Gopi's name remains on the voter list in Thiruvananthapuram for the local body polls, and that he has not removed his name from the list there or added it in Thrissur. The Election Commission and State Election Commission officials have been approached for comment, but have not responded to calls. The controversy is set to continue, with the CPI and Congress calling for a thorough investigation into the allegations of double voting.
