Canada's intelligence agency has explicitly blamed Canada-based Khalistani extremists for the 1985 bombing of Air India 'Kanishka' Flight 182, marking the 41st anniversary of the country's deadliest terror attack.
The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) stated that the bombing, which killed 329 people, most of them Canadians, was carried out by Canada-based Khalistani extremists.
The CSIS had previously flagged Canada-based Khalistani extremists as a security threat, but had not directly attributed the Kanishka bombing to them in recent years.
The agency noted that the bombing shaped its evolution and that it remains committed to protecting Canadians from political, religious, and ideologically motivated violence.
The CSIS' statement comes as the agency's annual reports have continued to highlight the threat posed by Canada-based Khalistani extremists, who continue to pose a national security threat to the country.
The Hindu Canadian Foundation welcomed the CSIS statement, calling for the designation of CBKEs as a terrorist entity to safeguard Canadians.
