The Congress party has announced plans to hold pan-India protests to expose what it calls 'vendetta politics' by the Narendra Modi government. The move comes after a Delhi court ruled that the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) action in the National Herald case was unjustified. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge accused the government of using agencies to defame Congress leaders and the Gandhi family. 'The National Herald case is nothing but a political vendetta,' Kharge said. 'This newspaper has a rich history dating back to 1938. The government is trying to use it to harass us and our leaders.' Congress general secretary KC Venugopal said party workers would hold protests and demonstrations across the country to expose the alleged misuse of power. 'We will take this to the streets of this country,' Venugopal said. 'We are going to take this all over India because this is a clear misuse of power.' The ED had alleged that Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi illegally obtained the underlying assets of Associates Journals Limited (AJL), which ran the National Herald newspaper. However, Congress lawmaker Abhishek Singhvi argued that the case was politically motivated and that the ED had failed to follow proper procedures. 'Shouldn't the ED have registered an FIR seven years ago if they had evidence?' Singhvi asked. 'Instead, they wrote in their files that there were no predicate offences. This is a clear case of political vindictiveness.' The ED has said it will challenge the Delhi court order. The Congress party's protests are a clear signal that it will not back down in the face of what it sees as harassment by the government.
